A fiery crash along I-70 in Lakewood, just west of Denver, has led to multiple fatalities and questions about why this tragedy happened. The shocking accident took place during the nightly commute on one of the busiest interstates in the area. Officials report that a semi-truck headed down a hill slammed into traffic that was at a standstill from regular traffic as well as a separate crash ahead. The crash caused a chain reaction of collisions involving at least 24 cars and four other semi-trucks finally culminating in a massive fire that burned for several hours after. The fire was so hot, it melted parts of the roadway and the metal off some of the cars and caused structural damage to the Colorado Mills bridge over the interstate.

Even though the driver of the semi-truck that caused the accident will be facing multiple charges of vehicular homicide, victims of this horrific crash may be wondering where to turn during this incredibly tough time. While mounting a claim for recovery may seem daunting in the wake of such a shocking tragedy, help is available to victims of the I-70 crash and their loved ones. Although no amount of compensation can undo the events of Thursday’s crash, the skilled car accident attorneys at Bachus & Schanker are committed to helping victims get the justice they deserve.

Who Will Be Held Responsible?

Officials haven’t released all of the pertinent information related to the reason the semi-truck driver barrelled into cars at an almost complete standstill. While they don’t believe alcohol or drugs are a factor in the crash, they are currently investigating whether the driver could have experienced a mechanical failure of some kind.

As this shapes up to be a complicated criminal case, the civil aspects remain relatively straightforward. It’s apparent negligence played a role in the crash in one way or another. Several different parties may be found to be negligent in this tragic crash. The driver of the semi-truck, the employer of the driver, or even the semi-truck manufacturer could be found civilly liable for the collision.

Colorado Car Accident Pileups

The massive collision on I-70 near Colorado Mills is shaping up to be what authorities describe as one of the worst accidents in Lakewood history. This isn’t the first time, even recently, that the Denver area has seen massive pileup accidents wreaking havoc on the roadways.

Earlier this year, a 49-car pileup on Peña Boulevard near 56th Avenue heading toward Denver International Airport left 17 injured. Snowy and icy conditions on the roadways caused poor visibility and ultimately led to the pileup.

In 2015, a 39-car pileup in the area where the Boulder Turnpike descends from Louisville to Boulder left at least three people with minor injuries. Like the crash in February of 2019, icy conditions on the roadways contributed to the cause of the accident.

In March of 2014, a 104-car pileup on northbound I-25 between Broadway Street and University Boulevard left one person dead and 30 others injured. Snowy conditions and drivers not driving carefully enough for the conditions lead to the fatal pileup.

Causes of Colorado Pileup Collisions

The cause of many of these multi-car collisions is related to winter weather conditions. However, in many of these cases, drivers are often not driving in a way that represents the nature of the conditions on the roadways. Speeding, distracted driving, tailgating, and many other driving habits come into play especially when snow and ice are present on the roadway. And while in many of these pileups, no traffic citations were issued, there may still be cause for a civil claim for compensation for negligence.

However, in the case of the I-70 pileup collision, the weather did not seem to play a factor. I-70 is an essential highway that connects the mountains with the plains. In the particular area where the crash occurred, the highway descends from the mountains just after steep grades. The area, known for tenuous traffic conditions, has signs and ramps on the sides of the roads to combat potential runaway truck situations.
