Pharmaceutical company Merck & Co., announced a recall for more than 1.2 million doses of the vaccine Hib due to contamination risks on Wednesday, December 12th.
The vaccine Hib protects against meningitis, pneumonia and other serious infections, and a combination vaccine for Hib and hepatitis B. The vaccine is recommended for children under 5 and is most commonly given to babies as young as two months old.
Merck & Co., produces half of the nation’s supply of the Hib vaccine. As a result of the recent recall, the company will not be able to supply any vaccine for at least 9 months which may cause of shortage.
Merck recently settled up to 50,000 Vioxx lawsuits for $4.85 billion which helped save the company millions in trial fees.
