Driving Tips for Winter Season

Posted in Miscellaneous, Motor Vehicle Accidents on 12/11/07

The winter weather in Colorado is known to change drastically from sunny to blizzard-like conditions within a short amount of time.

As a result, winter driving conditions can often be treacherous so taking the necessary precautions will ensure your safety while driving. The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) recommends the following driving tips for winter travel:

– Always keep the top half of your gas tank full. This can give you better traction and helps if you get stuck and need to keep warm.

– Keep a safety kit in your car including blankets, water, a flashlight, a shovel, nutrition bars/candy, jumper cables, an ice scraper, lock de-icer, and wiper fluid.

– Remember that 4-wheel drive does not mean 4-wheel stop. A 4-wheel drive vehicle will not stop any better in icy conditions.

– Never leave your car in the event of a serious storm. Run the engine periodically and wait for help.

– Always know your route and don’t go exploring without knowledge of where you are driving, especially in a storm.

– Check and make sure you have good tires for the winter season.

– In poor visibility or whiteout conditions, never drive faster than you can see ahead. High speeds and low visibility can lead to serious accidents.

– ALWAYS buckle your seatbelt!

To check current weather driving conditions and find out more about Winter driving in Colorado, go to CDot’s website at www.cotrip.org

At Bachus & Schanker, we understand the importance of your safety while driving, especially during the hazardous winter months in Colorado. If you or a family member has been injured in a car accident, please click here to find out more on how we can help.
