Aurora Drivers Ranked 4th Worst Drivers in the United States
Living in a city that has been listed among the top ten cities with the worst drivers in the U.S. can be concerning. A 2025 ConsumerAffairs report ranked Aurora, Colorado, as the fourth city with the worst drivers. The ConsumerAffairs research team analyzed the latest crash data reported by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for this study. In the 2023 and 2024 studies, Aurora ranked 53rd and 64th, respectively. 2025 is the first year the city has appeared in the top ten.

Factors That Contributed to This Ranking
According to the report, the contributing factor for Aurora’s rank was data that showed 11 people per 100,000 residents died in fatal crashes involving bad driving behaviors. Drunk driving is another leading factor that contributed to Aurora’s ranking among cities with the worst drivers.
When comparing cities based on fatal crashes involving alcohol use, Aurora ranks the seventh worst city nationwide at a rate of 5.38 deaths per 100,000 people. Additionally, it ranks second worst for the rate of fatalities involving positive blood alcohol content (BAC) readings at a rate of 7.43 fatalities per 100,000 residents.
Impaired driving is a major problem in Aurora and Colorado in general. In 2023, the state lost 716 lives to traffic fatalities, with 218 of them lost to impaired driving.
Heavy traffic volume also contributed to the high number of accidents in Aurora. The major roadways in the city, including the I-225 corridor, East Colfax Avenue, Interstate 70 (I-70), and Interstate 25 (I-25), experience significant congestion that increases the likelihood of an accident occurring.
Other factors that cause crashes in the city are distracted driving, speeding, fatigue, and reckless driving. Different types of accidents are reported in Aurora. These include rear-end, head-on, rollover, and side impact accidents.
How This Can Affect Car Insurance and Daily Life in Aurora
Insurance companies usually consider location when determining premiums. Aurora being on the top ten list of cities with the United States’ worst drivers makes it a high-risk area. Consequently, insurers are likely to charge higher premiums.
Daily life in Aurora is also likely to change. Some residents might experience anxiety on the road. Sharing the road with people who have been considered the worst in the country can be alarming.
Additionally, the ranking may increase the need for increased coverage for drivers. With the high number of fatalities reported in the study, the chances of drivers carrying additional coverage can be high. This is crucial, as it can save a driver from covering damages out of pocket.
Examples of Roads With Higher Accident Rates
Some roads in Aurora report high accident rates due to factors like heavy traffic and complex intersections. Examples of these roads are South Parker Road, East Alameda Avenue, East Mississippi Avenue, Tower Road, Buckley Road, and Havana Street.
Steps That Are Being Taken To Improve Driving Safety in Aurora
Aurora is taking several steps to improve driving safety. The city has a Neighborhood Traffic Calming Program whose aim is to improve safety in residential streets. The city uses a data-driven process to assess streets and, in turn, reduce speed and cut-through traffic. The strategies being implemented include enforcement and educational actions, and a physical infrastructure approach.
The traffic calming measures Aurora uses include automated speed radar signs, speed cushions, mini roundabouts, and curb extensions/neckdowns. These measures are to significantly reduce pedestrian accidents and improve overall safety in neighborhoods.
The Colorado Department of Transportation also launched the Colorado Speed Enforcement Program in June 2025. This program is deploying camera technology on roads with active construction work zones to reduce speed-related accidents and fatalities. Although it was initiated by the state, it will positively impact Aurora.
On May 1, 2025, the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) hosted a first-time safety summit in Aurora. The attendees, including NTSB Vice Chairman Alvin Brown, Aurora Mayor Mike Coffman, and representatives from the U.S. Sen. John Hickenlooper’s office, discussed transportation safety issues in Colorado. This shows the state’s and Aurora’s commitment to reach zero road fatalities.
In addition, the city is working with different agencies to obtain as much data as possible to identify high-risk areas to implement strategies that will help keep residents safe.
