Why Yasmin and Yaz birth control pills are under FDA investigation
In early 2009, the FDA (Food and Drug Administration) asked Bayer HealthCare Pharmaceuticals, (the makers of Yaz and Yasmin) to change Yaz TV commercials that were misleading. Bayer aggressively promoted the birth control pills as treatments or cures for symptoms related to menstruation, including treatment for PMS (premenstrual syndrome), acne, and muscle aches. Attorney Generals from 27 states joined the FDA in filing complaints against Bayer. The FDA warned Bayer that its commercials understated Yaz and Yasmin's risks and promoted unapproved usage of the pills.
Yaz and Yasmin are approved for only 3 medical uses:
- Pregnancy prevention
- Treating PMDD (premenstrual dysphoric disorder)
- Treating moderate acne
Yaz is the top-selling birth control pill in the United States. Between Yaz and Yasmin, both pills dominate the birth control market and account for more than 25% of the birth control pills administered in the United States.
Although Bayer agreed to run a massive advertising campaign to correct the misrepresentations in their prior ads, Yaz and Yasmin are the subject of at least 32 federal lawsuits. These suits allege that Bayer didn't warn of the increased risk of injury associated with the use of their birth control pills, and that Bayer overpromoted benefits to increase sales of the pill. 50 deaths associated with the use of Yaz from 2004-2008 are alleged in one of the federal lawsuits against Bayer.
