What is a Hernia?
Hernias occur when an organ or tissue squeezes through a break in surrounding muscle or connective tissue. Hernias may occur in various areas of the body. Areas where hernias typically occur include the groin, abdomen, and thighs because of a weak spot in tissue caused from an incision or pressure on the area of the body (e.g. from lifting, a bowel movement, and even coughing).
Use of Mesh in Hernia Surgeries Causing Serious Complications:
Hernia mesh is a medical device implanted during hernia repair surgery to reinforce weakened tissue and prevent the recurrence of a hernia.
Hernia Mesh is used in most of the more than 1 million annual hernia repair surgeries nationally to reinforce the weak tissue and prevent more hernias. While mesh can reduce the recurrence of hernias, some types of mesh are defective and do more harm than good causing serious complications that can result in missed work and even additional surgery.
Hernia Mesh Complications:
- Blockage of bowel
- Migration of Mesh Causing Hernia Recurrence (and even the need for exploratory surgery to locate the mesh)
- Mesh attachment to an organ
- Mesh perforation of an organ (may be life-threatening)
Recall of Defective Hernia Mesh
While some medical studies show that the use of hernia mesh correlates with a reduction in the hernia recurrence rate, when the mesh is defective and results in complications for numerous patients, it warrants the recall of those defective products from the market.
Our attorneys can review your case and let you know if you have a claim on your behalf or on behalf of your loved one resulting from defective or recalled hernia mesh against manufacturers that sold defective products and did not adequately warn patients about the risks of their products.
Below are some of the brands of hernia mesh that have been taken off the market.
The FDA recalled C-QUR™ Mesh (including Vpatch, Tacshield, FX, Mosaic and Film):
- Manufactured by Atrium Medical Corporation, a subsidiary to Maquet Holding company and used for hernia repairs from 2006-2015. Not only did the manufacturer fail to warn patients adequately about risks, but worse yet several Atrium Medical Corporation facilities were shut down for poor sterilization and other serious safety issues.
Physiomesh™ Flexible Composite Mesh
- Manufactured by Ethicon, Inc., (used for laparoscopic hernia repairs from 2010-2016 when Ethicon pulled the product off the market because patient data showed unreasonably high levels of complications requiring repeat surgeries).
