Avandia Medication and Heart Attacks

Avandia use linked to heart attacks. Call 303-222-2222

What are the risks involved with the diabetes drug Avandia?

The diabetes drug Avandia has serious, life-threatening side effects including heart attacks, severe chest pain, and heart-related deaths. Its manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline, threatened doctors and scientists who tried to point out the risks of an Avandia heart attack, according to a recent story in the New York Times.

The FDA (Food and Drug Administration) has issued a warning on significant safety concerns associated with the use of Avandia.

Thousands of Colorado diabetics who take Avandia may be at risk for dangerous complications including heart attacks, heart-related deaths, or severe chest pain.

Why is Avandia and its maker GlaxoSmithKline under Senate investigation?

Avandia, a drug designed to treat Type-2 diabetes and hypoglycemia, is linked with the following severe side effects:

  • heart attacks
  • heart-related death
  • severe chest pain

Avandia is designed to control the blood sugar levels of diabetics by increasing the body’s resistance to insulin.

On Saturday, February 20, a Senate report said that Avandia’s drug maker, GlaxoSmithKline, knew about Avandia’s side effects, including links to possible heart attacks, for years before the information was made public.

The FDA estimated that 83,000 heart attacks were caused by using Avandia between 1999 and 2007. The Senate report stated that GlaxoSmithKline, who knew about the heart attacks, “had a duty to sufficiently warn patients and the FDA of its concerns in a timely manner”.

The New England Journal of Medicine published an analysis in 2007 that revealed there was a 43% higher risk of heart attack for those taking Avandia compared to other diabetes medications or those not on medication.

If you or a loved one has used the drug Avandia and has had a heart attack, a heart-related death, or severe chest pain, you may have a case against GlaxoSmithKline. People taking Avandia for diabetes or high blood sugar should know the drug may present an immediate risk to their health.
