Defective Product Liability

Defective Child Safety and Baby Products

Manufacturers of products for babies and children must follow standards set by both the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Child Safety Protection Act.  Unfortunately, due to poor design, manufacturing mistakes, or inadequate warnings, defective child and baby products continue to pose a serious risk and cause thousands of devastating injuries in the United States each year. At Bachus & Schanker, LLC in Denver, Colorado, the product liability attorneys can help victims and their families take appropriate legal action against negligent or careless manufacturers.

Toys

The Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that in 2004 there were more than 200,000 toy-related injuries treated in U.S. hospital emergency rooms. Seventy-seven percent of the injuries for 2004 were to children under 15 years of age and 35 percent were to children under five. Twenty-three percent of the injuries were to persons age 15 and up. Popular toys like balls, balloons, game dice, motorized and non-motorized scooters, and stuffed animals, were involved in a large number of accidents. In addition, the CPSC reported that there were approximately 16 toy-related deaths involving children under age 15 in 2004.  The most common cause of death was choking or suffocation.

Child Safety Products

According to the CPSC, in 2003, defective baby and child safety products were responsible for nearly 35,000 injuries.  For example, items like car seats and carriers, which are designed to protect babies and children, caused more than 13,000 injuries. In addition, strollers and carriages caused more than 10,000 injuries, and more than 10,000 were caused by cribs. Given these numbers, it is especially important for parents to keep updated on recalls of defective baby products and other safety warnings.  For an up-to-date list of child safety product recalls, please visit:  http://www.cpsc.gov.
