Toyota Prius Brake Problems
On the heels of the largest motor vehicle recall ever, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) will begin an investigation of complaints about problems with the brakes on Toyota's Prius. The recent Toyota recalls due to faulty gas pedals and floor mats involves eight models and millions vehicles.

Decrease in Drunk Driving Deaths Found
Bachus & Shanker, LLC, a Colorado injury law firm, has compiled a report that shows a significant long-term decrease in the number of alcohol-related fatalities in the state of Colorado between 2004-2008. While there has been a short term increase of 5% between 2007 to 2008, the firm hopes the trend will revert back to the previous downward trend with a decrease in 2009 and that the findings will help act as a deterrent to those who may consider driving under the influence during the upcoming holiday season.

DUI Fatalities in Crashes in Colorado
In a recent analysis by Bachus & Schanker, LLC that looked at statistics from The Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT), The Colorado Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) of alcohol-related fatalities, some interesting trends emerged across Colorado's 63 counties. State-wide, alcohol-related deaths have consistently dropped since 2004. However, some counties showed marked increases.

Colorado Bans Texting While Driving Beginning December 1, 2009
Beginning December 1, 2009, Colorado law makes texting while driving illegal. If you're caught, penalties range from a $50 fine for a first offense to $100 for multiple offenses. Additionally, the new law bans anyone under the age of 18 from using a cell phone while driving.

MADD Tie One on for Safety Campaign Begins for the Holidays
As the holiday season officially begins this week, the Law Office of Bachus & Schanker, LLC supports Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) as they launch their 24th annual Tie One On For Safety campaign. Supporters tie MADD red ribbons to car antennas and keychains, or display a red ribbon decal on their vehicles, to show family and friends their commitment to support safer roads free from drunk drivers. The red ribbon symbolizes the driver's pledge to drive safe, sober and buckled up.

Dolls for Daughters Kicks off Third Year of Collections
Dolls for Daughters has kicked off its 3rd Annual Doll Drive and is collecting new, unwrapped dolls for young girls who are facing poverty, homelessness, abuse and neglect. These dolls will go to families served by Denver Children's Home, SafeHouse Denver, Samaritan House, The Gathering Place, Warren Village and other charities who serve children who might not receive a gift during this holiday season. This year's goal is to collect 800 dolls by December 18, 2009.

Colorado law banning cell texts while driving to take effect in December
Beginning December 1, 2009, it will be illegal for drivers to send text messages, emails and tweets on their cell phones. Under-aged drivers are also banned from all cell phone usage while driving.

Colorado Teen Still Searching for Kidney Donor
In the summer of 2007, Boulder teen Kelsey Crider was diagnosed with Medullary Cystic Kidney Disease during a routine physical exam in preparation for college. While Kelsey was fortunate enough that her father, Steve was a suitable donor, her complex immune rejected the donated kidney. To add to the family's heartache and frustration, a second transplanted kidney was also rejected due to medical complications.

Bright Future Ahead for Kelsey Crider after Kidney Transplant
During a routine physical in preparation for attending college, doctors found Kelsey was anemic and her hemocrit was low. She was later diagnosed with Medullary Cystic Kidney Disease and all plans for attending college were put on hold. Last week, doctors at the University of Colorado in Boulder, Colorado performed kidney transplant surgery for Kelsey Crider.

In Memoriam of Anna Pryor
March 9, 1988 - September 23, 2006
Eighteen year-old Anna Pryor's life was cut short on September 23, 2006 as a result of a tragic car accident.
Anna was with an abusive, eighteen year-old boyfriend with whom she was trying to end the relationship. Her boyfriend began driving her car more than 100 miles per hour while attempting to exit westbound on Interstate 70 at Quebec Street. He lost control of the vehicle and both Anna and her boyfriend were killed almost immediately in the crash.
